Here is an up-date for all those who have supported or who are interested in the Harrison County Girls on the Run (GOTR) team.
Ten girls, 3rd – 5th graders from Harrison County school system, signed up for the first ever Harrison County GOTR team. This team is sponsored by Harrison County Hospital, individual donors and the HCH Dress Down for Charity fund raising efforts. GOTR is a ten week long program. The girls have lots of fun every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30 – 6:00 pm at the YMCA. The team is continually increasing their running (or walking) goals each week. They celebrate and support one another. The coaches have shared lessons with the girls including showing each of the girls how they are unique, how to make choices with confidence and how to practice positive self-talk!
Since the last up-date, the girls have also learned; how to name their emotions, both comfortable and uncomfortable and how to share their emotions, how to follow good physical healthy habits, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, getting 8-10 hours of sleep/night, using sunscreen, limiting screen time (TV, videos, computer and cell phones). They have also learned how to have an “attitude of gratitude”, learning how to stay focused and block out distractions and how to recognize inner characteristics of beauty, such as being honest, showing respect, being helpful and kind, compassionate and caring, and confident and smart.
